Many thanks to Airbnb for their complimentary stays. #SponsoredbyAirbnb.
Airbnb is our go-to for accommodation and unique getaways. We have been lucky enough to enjoy some awesome destinations and unique experiences lately, allowing us to stretch our legs from our current home – a 22ft Jayco caravan. Rather than staying in a hotel, we like to book a house, apartment or even a funky vintage caravan!! There are so many options available and searching online for a place to stay is half the fun!
Airbnb is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to stay when travelling. If you haven’t stayed in an Airbnb it is definitely worth a try – we even have a discount code to share with you for $50.00 AUD off your first stay! Click here to claim.
Unique Experiences
Before we set off on our Lap of Oz caravan adventure we enjoyed a little kid-free time together in the Blue Mountains, NSW, which was bliss! When we found the listing for the Seven Sisters Escarpment property and the amazing twin baths that are set OUTSIDE in the most beautiful bush setting, we knew we just HAD to experience them for ourselves! You can see by our pics that they did not disappoint!!
The beauty of staying in an Airbnb property, as opposed to a hotel, is that it is usually cheaper, and it allows you to experience the ‘real’, authentic city or destination that you are visiting. Your host often shares local tips on where to go, what to see and where to eat. You also get to ‘live how the locals live’, which is something we love to embrace especially when travelling abroad. It’s these unique cultural experiences that broaden your horizons.
Our Stays
Past Airbnb stays had us enjoying a night under the stars, gazing up at the milky way surrounded by the rolling hills of Byron Bay in a cute vintage Caravan. It was an amazing magical experience that we still talk about! When planning a getaway with large groups of family or friends we have also enjoyed pooling our funds together to hire out a large property which is quite affordable when shared between 3 or 4 families.
When booking our accommodation we are definitely drawn to the opportunity to experience something ‘different and unusual’. This adds some adventure and magic to our stay which can’t be achieved in any run of the mill hotel or resort.
Our latest stay definitely takes the cake for unique and unusual –
Upon our recent arrival in Tasmania, we were after a little time to spread out from our caravan, especially following our 12 hour journey across Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania boat. We knew we had hit the ‘quirky accommodation jackpot’ when we saw the listing for The Round House.
Built by our super host Kim, this house has to be seen in the flesh to allow you to really appreciate the wonder and skill that is involved in creating such a stunning home. The peaceful property is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest and is definitely the place to ‘disconnect and recharge’. With crisp fresh air, crystal clear spring water and abundant wildlife, you are entirely off the grid as all electricity comes from a combination of solar power and micro hydro.
During our stay, we enjoyed the novelty of having a bath – in both the Round House and in the Japanese Wood-heated Bathhouse/Onsen, as well as exploring the property and nut garden. We also ventured to an amazing neighbouring property where the friendly owner allowed us to access his farm. We embraced this local hospitality by picnicking by the river with the kids and Rob enjoyed catching a few trout in the pristine waters. It was magic and something we would not have experienced without our Airbnb stay!

A few tips when booking your Airbnb stay:
- Make sure you read the reviews – One of Airbnb’s best initiatives is the reviews. They will tell you a lot about the property you are looking at. As with a lot of things online, sometimes the pictures and description by the owner may be a bit biased or false. You will want to read the reviews in order to see if the property is the correct one for you as well as how the host is, and more.
- Check the location – You may find the most amazing rental with a swimming pool, stunning gardens and an ensuite room for an unbelievable price and think how is that possible? MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE LOCATION. It may be kilometres away from any town or city with no good transport links. If you have a car and this is what you want then great, but a lot of people looking for rentals want convenience and good public transport access, so bear this in mind when looking for rentals.
- Read the rules of the property carefully – In the description of the property under ‘house rules’ there may be specific guidelines the host will highlight. It usually notes the check in / check out times, as well as things like – no kids (we hate that!), no smoking, no pets and no parties etc. so make sure you take note of these and be respectful to abide by them.
- Remember Airbnb is not a hotel – You may be greeted by your host upon arrival to show you the basics of the rental, but once gone, there will be no one to clean your place, cook for you and luxuries of room service etc. This is a common thing that a lot of travellers forget.
and most importantly –
- Have fun and make the most of new experiences and adventures
