We love our Oztent RV5 and as a full time adventurous family we receive a lot of questions about what gear we use, and particularly if we travel with a tent onboard as part of our lap of Australia set up.
There’s nothing better than getting off the beaten track to explore the road less travelled so it was a no brainer for us to pack our trusty Oztent for our big adVANture.
Watch the video on how we set up our 30 second OzTent –
On a recent trip out to Steep Point WA, we took a moment to show you how easy it is to set up:
The OzTent model we have is called the RV5 (a 5 man tent), which fits our family of 4 with loads of room inside for our gear. They call it “the 30 second tent” and it certainly lives up to its name! (see above video!) We also like to have an enclosed covered area to store our chairs, cooking gear and protect us from bitey bugs, so we also have the deluxe peaked side panels and the deluxe front panel which works great for this, as well as the floor saver mat – which extends all the way underneath the base of the tent and out to the front of the awning.
We love this setup and it works great for us. When packed down the OzTent dimensions are 200cm x 40cm x 18cm and it weighs 25kg. We store the tent on the roof of our adventure truck for easy access and our self-inflating sleeping mats and sleeping bags are stored under the lounge in our caravan.
Do you have an OzTent? What’s your camping setup? If you have any questions let us know, we’d be happy to answer them for you.

We have a camper trailer but need a new tent for when we do overnighters. Our current tent is getting a bit small now the children are growing up. I like how the Oztent sets up so quickly.

Hi guys
We have an Oztent as well(RX4) with the same set up that you have with walls and floor. Our family is 4(2 of us plus our kids 10 month old and 5 year old) Based in Brisbane.
We are currently deciding which caravan we will get Starcraft or Outback journey.
Why you decided Star craft over OB ?
Do you take the oztent just for those remote campsites where Caravan is a no go or tight spot?
If we can’t get the Caravan, do you think it gets too much hard travelling with kids and spending time in the Oztent?
Thanks
Kind regards

Hi guys, We have a Starcraft Outback, so it has the higher suspension – you can see our caravan tour video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y21_R5F1Mag&feature=youtu.be we definitely think the outback is the go for a Lap of Aus. You can travel with just the tent and we have met some families who have done it. It all comes down to your budget, comfort levels/tolerance and what suits your family. For longer trips with kids I think having something that is quick to set up is a must and having space inside for rainy days etc. will save your sanity. Definitely try a few shorter camping trips to test the waters before a big adventure. Hope that helps, cheers guys and happy travels! T x

Hi Anthony, as a family of 4 we fit in one line together really well with our bags at the base of the kids feet. There’s plenty of room especially with the extra side walls etc.

I am concerned about the sleeping setup as well for the RV5 with four, 2 adults and 2 kids (9+7), your blog doesnt show that aspect could you update with some images?
Trying to decide if we need the tagalong extension
Is there a zipp up floor for that front room?
thankyou
Tracy Morris says
Hi Andrew, You would all fit in the RV5 no problems, even as our kids are getting bigger we fit fine along with our bags etc. I do recommend the front room extension to house all your other belongings. This dose not zip at the base, you just peg it down over the floor mat. Hope that helps, Cheers, Trace
