Whether it’s the bush or the beach we love getting off the beaten track. One of the best things you can do to make your car more capable for off road 4wding is lower your tyre pressures.
Adjusting your tyres according to driving conditions, not only improves vehicle performance and limits strain on your tyres, but it also reduces the chances of getting bogged, (which is handy for us just quietly lol!), and provides the comfiest ride possible.
While it’s fairly common knowledge to lower pressures on sand, it’s also just as important when tackling mud, rocky tracks and even corrugated gravel roads.
An easy way to drop your tyre pressures is by using a tyre deflator. By doing this, the footprint of the tyre increases helping you float over the soft stuff and also allow the tyre to mould around obstacles for improved traction.
Our Tyre Pressure Recommendations –
- BEACH DRIVING/SOFT SAND: Start at 18 PSI and go down from there if needed.
- CORRUGATED GRAVEL ROADS: 30 PSI works well.
- SLOW ROCKY TRACKS/ROCK CRAWLING: 14 PSI.
PSI = Pounds per square inch
When it’s time to head home, BEFORE you hit the bitumen, be sure to air-up. That’s where a reliable portable generator is key. Simply Pull up somewhere safe and inflate your tyres to their recommended PSI. And if you are towing a camper of caravan, be sure to adjust their tyres too.
We hope this has given you some more confidence for your own off-road adventures – and remember, the fun starts when the tar ends!!
